(Alan) Paul Harris was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1935, Paul Harris always retained an affection for his native country, even though he has resided in Los Angeles for most of his adult life. Harris was a close friend of Wayne R. Dynes since their schooldays together in Mount Vernon Junior High School, Los Angeles. Trained as a librarian, Harris later worked as a bureaucrat in an office of the State of California. During the 1970s, he started as a volunteer in the Hollywood offices of the Homosexual Information Center, headed by Don Slater. Together with his friend Billy Glover, he remained a stalwart of the organization for many years. He was esteemed in the group for his courtesy, tact, resourcefulness, and dedication. In general, Paul Harris preferred to make his contribution collectively rather than individually, so that relatively few papers bear his name.
