To the Editor:

Re Alan Cowell’s article of the 21st of September, “Goethe is Outed and Germany Yawns”: You might have included a telling quote from the Weimar edition of Goethe’s work:

“I loved boys too, but I prefer the girls;
If I have had enough of one as a girl,
she still serves me as a boy.”

Or mentioned the statue in Weimar of Goethe and Schiller holding hands - long a subject of jokes and cartoons in Germany.
