libellisua fata habent—or books have their destinies
Saturday, June 25

A few days ago, the janitorial staff of my building made an announcement to the effect that retiring profs could deposit their unwanted books into two large dumpsters on the main floor. I checked them last night and lo and behold, they were filled nearly to the brim with an huge assortment of almost exclusively social science books representing the disciplines of economics, sociology, and political science. The dumpsters certainly did not receive any of my classics- and humanities-related books, which went to my home last week and are now proudly standing on handsome, newly put up book shelves. I am sure you can draw your own moral from this. What, after all, are the classics?
